Maintaining a Harsh Coat

Much is said about conditioning and softening dry coats but there is not a lot of information on what to do with those breeds that need to have a harsh texture to their coat. Typical of this are most of the Terriers which are required to have a wiry harsh outer coat. Labradors are required to have a fairly hard feeling to the coat as are Wire Haired Dachshunds and German Wirehaired Pointers etc. There are several breeds that call for that harsher feel to the coat. One assumes the dog in question has a correct coat to start with, or as close as one can get and that the aim is to maintain and keep the correct texture for ring presentation.

Often is seen these breeds unwashed. Often we hear they have been dry-cleaned if cleaned at all - meaning that they are powder cleaned or “dust and brushed“. Just envisage all that powder lying close to the skin causing heat and irritation to the dog. Maybe this is why a lot of the Terriers appear to have skin problems. Let the skin breath free! It can be done - one can wash and clean and still have texture.

Never subscribe to the old belief that “this is the way it has always been done and this is the way it has to be”. Heavens! We don’t sit and listen to crystal radios anymore either. Life moves along and progress presents new opportunities to do things better. Quite often tradition is just bad habits passed down the line. Who knows if those before us knew what they were doing? Maybe they just did the best they could with what they had?

The trick is to cleanse without softening and as we all know that conditioners soften, make sure you don’t use one if you want to keep harsh texture. You see, conditioners are acid balanced and that flattens down the outer cuticle layer of the hair making it slippery and smooth. They also contain softeners and that is not what you want in this scenario. Cleanse without softening!

Plush Puppy Texture+ (plus) is the perfect shampoo for dogs with a terrier and harsh textured coats. Plush Puppy Texture + is another product formulated using the latest technology to retain and improve coat texture. Recommended to thoroughly yet gently cleanse and deodorise the coat of Terriers and other wire, harsh or coarse coated breeds without softening or compromising texture. It’s ideal for boosting body and coarseness in coats of all colours and coat types. Formulated to be pH controlled, creates and maintains texture, easy to rinse out and low irritant with a subtle apple fragrance. Incorporates Gentian Root Extract, Juniper Fruit Extract, St John’s Wort Leaf Extract, Norway Spruce Leaf Extract, Hayflower Extract, Lemon Balm Leaf Extract, Arnica Flower Extract. Use dilute up to 1:10 or apply undiluted directly to areas requiring cleansing. Rinse thoroughly.

The secret to any harsh/terrier coat is not to condition as this will soften but still to hydrate the coat. For this Plush Puppy has excellent products that will retain the texture yet allow needed protection to keep the coat healthy.

Plush Puppy Reviva Coat is an amazing foam that easily hydrates the coat without softening. Can be applied after the bath. Great for adding that extra hydration to areas such as furnishings or longer coated areas. Simply apply a golf ball sized amount to your hands and work through the area. Can be reapplied during the week to dry coat.

Another product is Plush Puppy Seabreeze Oil. This is light, water soluble and smells great. It is an old Ayervedic recipe and contains Calendula Oil, Evening Primrose Oil and other goodies. Now work it lightly through the coat. You don’t need to overdo it. Add a teaspoon up to 1 tablespoon to a bucket 4L or 1 gallon of warm water and then whoosh it through the coat and leave in as a final rinse. Don’t rinse out, this ensures a good healthy coat without softening.

Always use a dryer after washing a harsh and terrier type coat. For the terrier type coats it’s important to dry that coat nice a flat. Do not use a force dryer backwards on the coat. You wish to dry this coat nice and tight against the body. For this type of drying a warm hand/stand dryer is best. With the direction of the coat brush using the Plush Puppy Ultimate Black Boar Bristle Brush. This brush is exclusive to Plush Puppy and with its ergonomically designed shape and handle using the very best of boar bristles. These reduce and static and allow you to create the perfect finish. For those with a longer harsh coat use the Plush Puppy Ultimate Anti-Static Porcupine Brush. This is again exclusive to Plush Puppy using the same boar bristles combined with dialon bristles which allow detangling properties, perfect for those longer coats. For those needing a slicker use the Plush Puppy Ultimate Slicker brush. This is simply the very best you can use. Soft yet gets through the coat. A must have brush.

Some dogs require some “Added” texture. Plush Puppy has developed products to help to achieve even greater results.

Plush Puppy Powder Puff Terrier is the “best of the best” when adding texture. Designed using the latest technology, combining several compounds to create this amazing powder. A light sprinkle of this powder and a light brush in will add the texture. It is suitable for all coat colours as it easily brushes out. Perfect for a pre application for hand stripping also.

Another is Plush Puppy Ruffy Tuffy Coat Spray. Ruffy Tuffy adds texture and crispness to the coat. Boy does it ever! Yet it does it without feeling sticky. A light spray over the area needed and wait 1 minute. It strands the hair out, individualising the hairs without drying hard or sticky. It is different from anything you have used before. Can be reapplied until the texture you need is created.  It is water soluble and therefore will not build up.

You can use your Plush Puppy Sit N Stay, excellent for shaping and moulding coats into place Apply small amount to fingertips – will initially feel sticky – rub together till warm and the initial stickiness starts to dissipate – then apply to coat, either at the roots for lift or to the mid lengths and trailing to the ends for Terriers.

Plush Puppy Stuk Up will also add texture by allowing the coat to be held into a shape. This is like a non-aerosol hairspray. STUK UP 'Cement Strength' Styling & Coat Fix is perfect for use on wet or dry coats when sculpting & fixing the coat to shape or finish. Directions: Spray approx. 25cm from coat & press pump repeatedly. NOTE: Water Soluble & pliable when brushed.

We really love these outdoorsy dogs - they bristle with attitude and vigour, they appear fearless, feisty and very no nonsense. One could be fooled into thinking their presentation is no nonsense too - WRONG! There is just as much work goes into the preparation of the hand stripping on a Terrier and harsh textured coats to shape the silhouette.

Plush Puppy understands these types of coats. With their team of world class chemists using the very latest of technology have produced this amazing range of product with your dog’s coat types in mind.
